Chairman's Report

Brods Kick off playing up hill and after the opening exchanges a high tackle by Michael Briggs was penalised in centre field to be converted from the 22 by Crossland the Moortown number 12, 0-3 after 6 minutes play. During the early stages Moortown dominated territory with some good tactical kicking.
The home side eventually worked their way with some patient play into the Moortown 22 and a penalty awarded to them following a ruck infringement was converted by Phil Town to draw the sides level 3-3. After 20 minutes Moortown were awarded a penalty and a kick to corner resulted in a lineout which was well controlled and from close quarters loose forward broke free to touch down the score was extended with another well taken conversion 3-10.
Brods were competing well in the scrum although inconsistent at the lineout. In midfield honours were being shared at ruck and maul however Brods conceded a penalty for handling in the ruck and Crossland duly stepped up to extend the Moortown lead to 13-3 with an excellent kick from 40 metres. Brods defended well for the remaining ten minutes of the first half and with the half time whistle the question was whether the visitors had sufficient lead to take into the second period with Brods now having the benefit of the slope and developing wind assistance.
Moortown had the ideal start to the second half when a clearance kick from the Woodside boys was returned with pace and following some good support and linking play to cut the home side defence and take the immediate initiative with a try under the posts The try was again converted by …. no 12 and at 20 points to 3 the Hipperholme boys needed to provide an immediate response .
Brods response was indeed immediate as they took the game to their visitors and camped on their line with a series of strong drives from the forwards. The pressure told when young hooker Liam Stapley stepped through the defence to touch down much to the delight of the large crowd. Town duly converted and Brods were back in the game 10-20 after 10 minutes of the second half. Brods momentum was building as they now dominated play in all areas. Following strong running from the forward pack Brods were now clearly on top and added to their score with a well finished try by Jason Dodds in the left hand corner following good linking play by the home sides back line. At 15 points to 20 Brods were clearly in the game and continued to take the game to their visitors with powerful running throughout the side. As a result from a good position in the Moortown 22 the ball was moved right and Alex Murphy finished strongly down the right taking several tacklers over the line with him to pull the sides level. With Phil Town converting from the touchline Brods took the lead for the first time Brods 22 Moortown 20. Moortown responded as the game became a little feisty and took play into the Brods half, a penalty conceded by Brods was reversed by the referee for indiscipline and the clearing kick diffused the building pressure. A further penalty kick to Moortown was missed and with 5 minutes remaining on the clock Brods continued with the style of play which had brought them success in the second half. The Brods forwards had the edge over their opposition throughout and with more strong running through Bennie Pritchett, Alex Dawson, Danny Vento and Rob Jennings the Hipperholme boys again took the game to their opposition. Brods camped on the Moortown line following a poor clearance kick and after some great rucking scrum half Joe Armitage took advantage of the scattered defence to power his way over from close range. Towns conversion extended the lead to 29-20 with just three minutes remaining.
As the game moved into injury time and the referee called last play Moortown took advantage of several penalties awarded to take play to the home line in the right hand corner. They duly crossed to score but with a missed conversion there was no change to the result as Brods progressed into the Yorkshire Shield Final to be held at Keighley next Thursday the 2nd May KO 7.30pm .
