Old Cents started their Senior cup campaign with a comfortable win against a Spartans side who play two leagues below them in the league structure.
Cents had too much fire power in all areas of the field for a committed and hard working Spartans side who are rebuilding at the moment. No matter what side Spartans put out,you will come up against a side who never gives up and will battle to the end.
Cents were never at their best with wrong options being taken a number of times and also overlaps were not used quite alot. However Cents did score some good tries and ran the ball from everywhere.
Cents scored first from a penalty try when Spartans were under pressure at a scrum near their try line,Old Cents were always on top at the scrummage. The try was converted by Liam Hemmings.
However Spartans came back at Cents after this setback and converted two penalties after forcing errors from the home side.Indeed Spartans had a purple patch of about 10 mins after the Cents try wherby they had the home side penned in their own half.
Cents settled their nerves when John Huxtable scored a fine try when he rounded of a move started deep in the home sides half.Liam Hemming converted the try for a 14-6 score line. This try was followed just before half time by another Old Cents score when Liam Hemming used his pace to score near the posts.Liam again converted his score for a half time score of 21-6 to Old Cents.
Old Cents dominated the second half and Spartans were only in the home sides 22 near the end of the match. However the away side tackled their hearts out to stop Cents running away with the match.Cents scored four tries in the second half through Kieran Blackmore,Alex Mathers,Rob Pinkney and brother Rich Pinkney.Liam Hemming converted all four tries for a personal tally of 19 point from the match.
Cents will have to step up another level for the next match because they have Old Richians who are going well at the moment and Cents always struggle against them.
