Old Cents reached the Senior cup final as expected but were given a hard match by a gallant Hucclecote side who fought for everything. It was a disjointed performance by the home side and was perhaps one of their worst performances of the season. However, nothing should be taken away from Hucclecote who made things difficult for the home side.Hucclecote harried and tackled Old Cents into making plenty of mistakes and put the home side under pressure at times.
Although Old Cents did make plenty of mistakes, they still had to much fire power for Hucclecote and their defence took everything Hucclecote threw at them.
Old Cents scored early in the match when scrum half Alex Mathers went over from close range and Liam Hemming converted for a 7-0 lead.Cents were well in control for the early stages and should have increased their lead, but chances went begging from poor passes and bad decision making.
Hucclecote came back in the next 10 mins and scored a penalty and a converted interception try as the home side tried to run out of defence.Hucclecote led 7-10 and were the more composed side at this stage. However it was a matter of time before Cents got their act together. In the last 10 of the half Cents were camped in the Hucclecote 22 and did everything but score. Then the home side ran in two quick tries to ease themselves into the lead going into the break.Cents scored two converted tries through Capt. Peter Willetts and centre Rob Pinkney. Both tries were converted by Liam Hemming and the score at half time was 21-10 to Old Cents.
Old Cents were glad of the half time break as they could regroup after an indiffernt first half.Although Old Cents had had plenty of the ball they were let down badly by bad handling and wrong options taken.Hucclecote had also made things difficult for the home side with some resolute defending and pressure on the home side.
Cents needed to score early in the second half to settle their nerves and this they did when Michael Mumford crashed over within a minute of the start of the second half. The try was unconverted and Cents now led 26-10.
Cents then went on to ensure their victory when they ran in a further three tries, one of which was converted. The home side scored tries through Matthew Humphries(2) and Pete Willetts second try of the match. One Conversion was kicked by Liam Hemming and going into the last 10 mins Cents led 43-10.
To their credit Hucclecote came back at Cents and scored a converted try of their own and this was no more than they deserved for a performance they can be proud of.Final score 43-17 to Cents and they can now move onto their final with Coney Hill, however they will have to up their game if they are to lift the Senior cup for the first time.
Old Cents man of the match, decided by Coach Jack Preece, went to prop Scott Fritchley.Jack was happy with the win but not very happy with the performance of his under firing side.
