Cents over came a strong and workman like Newton Abbot side to record their first win of the new season, games between Cents and Newton Abbot are always close and entertaining and this match was no different from from our previous encounters.LIke Cents, Newton Abbot have lost a few quality backs during the close season and they are looking to build some cohesion in their back play although their pack was more or less the same from last season.
Cents had to make two changes from last week as both Sam and Joe Preece were away in France celebrating their dad Rob's 50th birthday. This meant that Nathan Stroud was played at Prop and Barney Goatley started in the Centre.
The match was played at a fairly brisk place with both sides looking to move the ball around from any where on the field of play .However both sides defences were on top as scoring chances were at a premium, the effort and commitment put in by both sides was first class.
Cents were dominant in the loose and did not allow Newton Abbot time on the ball and their scrum held firm with Nathan Stroud playing out of position.
In the first 20 minutes Cents built up 6-0 through two converted penalties by Ollie Locke and with 10mins of the first half left they scored the try of the match when no.8 Dean Harper scored under the posts following a flowing attack started by Ollie Locke on Cents 22 metre line.
Cents led 13-0 at this stage but Newton Abbot converted a penalty of their own on the stroke of half time to make the score 13-3 to Cents.Cents had been the better of the two sides at half time whereby they took their chances and Newton Abbot did not. Both sides have given their all and this was a good match to watch.
Cents knew they could not relax as Newton have shown in the past against Cents they never give up and were capable of scoring quick points when they are on top with good quick ball.At the beginning of the half Newton Abbot mounted their come back and after 10 mins of the second half they were level on points 13-13 after they scored a penalty and converted try. However no sooner had Newton Abbot levelled the scores then Cents scored a well worked try finished of by Sam Smith and this try was well converted by Ollie Locke from wide out, score 20-13 to Cents.
With 10 mins to go Newton scored a penalty to make the score 20-16 and this set up a tense final part of the match, however following
a speculative kick down to the Newton Abbot try line in the dying mins, the away sides full back fumbled the ball on their goalline.Richard Webster following up the kick was able to pounce on the ball and score the match winning try.The try was converted by Ollie locke for a final score line of 27-16 to Cents.
This young Cents side deserved their victory, they defended well as a team, held their own in the tight and took their chances when they came along. At no time in the match were Newton Abbot allowed time on the ball in the loose, the Cents forwards were outstanding.
For Cents their man of the match must be Nathan Stroud for his tremendous efforts playing at prop,he usually is the clubs hooker.
