Cents extended their unbeaten run of matches to five when they defeated a strong Chippenham side pushing for promotion.Chippenham were lying in second place before this match and the away side showed why they are having a good season and it took Cents best team performance of the season to beat them.
This was a classic match played in the right spirit by two sides who were willing to play a fast open match that was a credit to both sides. Both sides attacked from everywhere on the field and the time shot by with plenty of thrills and spills for both sets of supporters to enjoy. The lead changed hand plenty of times as soon as one side scored the other responded more or less straight away.
Cents had the edge in the tight and their line out functioned the best it had all season plus the forwards competed well in the loose and more than matched their visitors in that area.If Chippenham had any advantage it was in the backs as they attacked with speed and had Cents defending well at all times to deny the top scorers in the league,Chippenham have had some very big wins this season.
Cents were to score first and they did so through No.8 Tim Willcox following a scrum close to the Chippenham line, the try went unconverted for a score of 5-0 to the home side.Chippenham responded straight away with a converted try of their own, score 5-7 to the away side.Cents were next to score when they converted a penalty and then again when they were awarded a penalty try following a scrum infringement which highlighted Cents dominance in the tight.Score 15-7 to the home side and soon after the Cents try Chippenham hit back with a further converted try of the their own and just before half time they scored another to make the score 15-19 to the away side.
The first Half had had flown by because of the fast pace the match was being played at and apart from the score their was nothing to choose between the two sides who were going at each other through good attacking rugby. The pace and the excitement continued into the second half with both sides trading tries until a dramatic end to the match.
Cents regained the lead shortly after half time when Lewis May scored a try which was converted by Shay Morgan for a score line off 22-19 to the home side. However Chippenham once again scored a converted try soon after Cents had scored, score 22-26 to the visitors. Cents were next to score when Shay Morgan scored a try plus converted a penalty for a score line of 30-26 to the home side going in to the final minutes of the match.Chippenham once again scored not long after Cents when they had a converted try in the final minutes of the match and the visitors must have thought they had won the match with the score standing at 30-33 to the away side.
However Cents showed plenty of character and went on a final push from their own half in the dying minutes of the match.Starting deep in their own half they made their way down to their visitors 15 metre line whenthey had a lineout which was won and the home side pushed the away sides forwards back to their own line with Centre Ryan Townsend crashing over for the winning score.Shay Morgan converted the try from the touch line for a final score of 37-33 to the home side.
Chippenham were gutted and obviously Cents were elated to have won when it seemed the visitors would go away with a victory. However this was a great match to watch with both sides going at each for the entire match and it was shame someone had to win but Cents did and kept up their unbeaten run.Cents win was built on a strong pack performance whereby they dominated Chippenham in the tight plus their lineout was excellent along with their play in the loose. The home side now move on the Wimborne next week when they play a rearranged match. This will not be an easy match as Wimborne have showed some form of late and Cents will have to be on top of their game to get a result.
