Cents won their first ever match at Chippenham thanks to a late missed conversion in front of their posts.Cents went to Chippenham knowing they would be in for hard match having not won there since our two clubs have been playing league fixtures and this proved to be the case. The match was a great example how rugby should be played with both sides committed to a fast open game played in the right spirit. This match had everything from good play, both in defence and attack ,fight backs plus very late drama.
Cents started strongly and raced into a 0-17 lead in as many minutes however, by just after half time Chippenham hand fought back to 19-22 going into the last quarter.Cents had scored four tries through Rob Winchle,Ross Hannaford,Lewis Locke plus Lewis May with Wayne Mulhern converting one of the tries.During this period of play there was nothing between the sides who were playing some good rugby and the final quarter went very much the same way. Both sides attacked each other from every where and it was exciting and tense to watch.
Going into the final 10 minutes Cents had built up another lead of 19-32 through a try scored by Rob Winchle(2) plus a penalty with conversion scored by Wayne Mulhern and it looked as if they would see out the rest of the game comfortably. However Chippenham had other ideas and mounted another come back scoring a converted try plus another try right on the final whistle for a score line of 31-32 with a conversion in front of the posts to come. However, their kicker who had kicked well all afternoon managed to miss the simple kick and Cents were therefore fortunate to come away with a win.
Cents were very relieved to come away with a win, a draw would have been a more than fair result against two evenly matched sides who were a credit to their cubs and rugby.Chippenham got two points from the match and proved they are a match for the top sides on their day.Cents kept their second place and now face a difficult next two matches against Marlborough at home and then Newbury away. However Cents will be able to call upon their strongest squad going into these matches and therefore there is still everything to play for coming towards the end of the season.
