Cents beat local rivals Old Pats yesterday after a very strong last 30 mins of their match at the Stade de Bridge.Although Cents were in front and on top for most of the match, however it was not until the last 30 mins that the home side turned their performance into a complete dominance
of Old Pats.
Cents were in control from the start of the match and it was only a strong defence from Pats which kept them in the match but the home side had to be on their guard as the away side looked sharp on the counter attack.Cents took the lead after 23 mins through a penalty by Harry Preece and they went on to build up a 15-3 half time lead with two tries by Rob Winchle plus a conversion by Harry Preece.
Pats scored their three points at the end of the first half through a penalty and shortly after the break scored an unconverted try to bring themselves back into the match. The score was now 15-8 to Cents and Pats had their tails up and the home side had to do some defending of their own to protect their lead. However once Cents weathered the Pats short period of control the home side blew the away side aside with some excellent attacking play from deep.
Pats had no answer to Cents slick handling and pace of the home sides forwards plus backs, with the home side running in five tries in the last 30 minutes.Cents scored their second half tries through Dale Cookwest,Liam Hemming(on his return to the club),Luke Jones,Dan Tyler and a third for Rob Winchle with Hary Preece converting three of the tries to complete the home sides scoring.
Final score 46-8 to Cents who were well worth their win against a Pats side struggling this season, however the away side played with a lot of spirit and certainly had their moments in this match.Cents day was made after this local derby victory when news came through that they were at the top of the table after Bassett's surprise loss at Chippenham.Next week Cents travel to Oxford Harlequins and this will not be an easy match as they are going well this season and presently lie fourth in the table.
