The U12 A squad came runners up in the Cup competition at the Bromley Festival on Sunday

For the second weekend running we were undone by a fired up Old Beccs side who beat us by a single try again in a hard fought and physical encounter. Both sides played some excellent fast running rugby with no quarter asked or given. Despite missing 5 A squad players due to injury (James, Richard, Ben and Matt) being unavailable for the final, the remaining 14 boys really did us proud losing narrowly to a golden try in extra time.

With such an outstanding team effort its difficult to single anyone out but Jacob was superb all morning tackling anything that moved, whilst Oscar did a great turn for us playing out of position at Number 8 in the final two games.

In terms of results:

OE's v Battersea Ironside WON 2-0

Our one previous match against Battersea was enough to know that they would be a formidable opponent and so it proved. We warmed up well and when into a really physical game to open where we had to be at our very best to secure this win. Try of the day came in this match where James stole a Battersea lineout and ran the full length of the pitch to score. Battersea went on to beat Tunbridge Wells in the Plate Final which underscores they ability.

OE's v Beckenham WON 2-1

Becks are really developing into a big challenging team particularly when the quality of our own play slips below our normal high standards. A couple of poor passes and missed overlaps and opportunities to secure the game more comfortably came back to bite us near the end as we spent the last 5 mins defending our try line which we did with everyone throwing themselves into the tackle. With the final move of the game Becks won a quick ruck and moved the ball out wide to score.

OE's v Bromley A WON 5-0

Another game where we started slowly and made too many simple mistakes. This was compounded by a home field referee who had clearly spent Saturday night reading the rule book and Sunday morning discharging it our way. An injury to Richard gave us the opportunity to re-focus and after a lengthy stoppage he came our really firing to score 5 unanswered tries, with a couple well worked across the backline with Dillon and Mac touching down in the corner.

OE's v Colfes WON 3-0

Two intercept tries by Jacob and Dillon see us run out comfortable winners

And so onto the final where we looked to vary our game plan from the previous week with a view to run Beccs around the field a little more. The game was evenly matched and played in the centre of the pitch for the most part, but with no subs and having played 3 matches without change we were unable to keep it up into extra time. A well worked move by Beccs saw them move the ball wide to the right where the winger set up a ruck from which their forwards picked up and drove over the line to score.

The coaches were immensely proud of the effort all the boys put in at Bromley. Our defence was first class with the backs in particularly tackling everything that moved. Our pressing defence created a number of tries. In the forwards we scrummage well with the line out also going well.

Next weekend at Southend will be another step up and we'll need to be on the top of our game, but as we proved at Bromley and Blackheath we have strength in depth to be competitive and the ability to win even in adversity.

Well done boys you did yourselves proud.
