After 2 sessions of specialist 7s training, the OEs squad headed off to sunny Canterbury for the 2016 Kent 7s with high hopes. 25 teams were entered and initially split into 4 groups. OEs hit the ground running to win all 4 of the group matches quite comfortably:
• 45-nil v Sittingbourne
• 42-nil v Tunbridge Wells Bs
• 31-21 v Thanet
• 54-nil v Bromley
We expected tougher fixtures to follow, but again achieved comfortable victories in the quarter-final, beating Canterbury Bs 47-7, and the semi-final beating Blackheath 36-7.
So on to the final against Beccehamians. Our boys continued their brilliance into the final and ran out comfortable winners 33-12.
The whole squad played a part as we rotated the team to preserve our energy. The stats show both our clinical finishing and our solid defence, with 44 tries scored and only 8 conceded.
We received some very kind messages from admiring onlookers, but the one that sums the day up best came from another head coach,
"Your boys were deserved winners and played some beautiful rugby."
To be honest a lot of coaches were very complimentary on the way the boys played and you should be proud.
