U15 Cup double for Moyse’s marvels

OEs’ all-conquering Under-15s celebrated an unprecedented County double at Ashford RFC on Sunday on another memorable finals day for the club.

Paul Moyse’s U15s A team successfully retained the Kent Cup with an impressive 34-7 victory over Sevenoaks - the fourth time they have been crowned county champions - while the club’s B team lifted the Kent Development Cup after a hard fought 38-21 victory over Thanet Wanderers.

It’s the first time an age group from the same club has claimed both titles in the same season and the double triumph comes just a week after the Under-18s and U17s won their respective county finals.

Delighted team manager Paul Moyse was full of praise for both sides. “I am still buzzing after our great day out yesterday,” he said. “I understand that this has never been achieved before by an age group in living memory although the club’s current U18s came close a few years back.

“It’s a tremendous achievement by this hard working, dedicated and talented bunch of young guys. We dedicated the wins to A team coach Gary Tootill who is leaving us after five years to start working with a younger age group. Thanks for everything, Gary!”

Elthamians were made to work hard for their victory in the main final against a Sevenoaks side who started much the stronger of the two sides. It was a game of contrasting styles with Oaks looking to keep things tight thought their impressive, well drilled forwards, while OEs attempted to move the ball wide at every opportunity and make full use of the big pitch.

Although Sevenoaks dominated possession and territory for large periods of the final, Elthamians were ruthless in capitalising on scoring opportunities. Despite twice being reduced to 13 men for indiscretions as the game neared its climax, all five of their tries were scored by the wingers.

Man of the match was U16 Harlequins Academy player Lorcan O’Byrne who orchestrated proceedings superbly from fly-half, while pick of the forwards was Connor Moyse.

In the Development Cup final, OEs were given an even tougher examination by Thanet and found themselves 14-5 down at half-time having spent most of the opening 40 minutes defending their line as the big Thanet forwards threw the kitchen sink at them.

However, the second half saw OEs transformed as they played a more expansive game plan, moving the ball away from the powerful Thanet pack at every opportunity.

They were rewarded for their efforts with four unanswered tries in relatively quick succession which effectively saw off the Thanet challenge. A much deserved try from Selim Karatas in the final minute capped a hard fought victory.

Winger Sam Taylor picked up the man of the match award thanks to his dazzling four-try performance while Harvey Tootill, Rafe Petitt, Shaun Fisher and captain Harry Mills were also mentioned in dispatches.
