Some great rugby today at a Foxbury which was well organised and not as wet and windy as forecast.

Some great rugby today at a Foxbury which was well organised and not as wet and windy as forecast.

Our boys found themselves in a good group with matches (in order) against Westcombe Park, Cranbrook, Bromley and Sidcup. On a general note it was great to see such great support from the parents, much improved discipline from the boys and rugby played in such a good spirit by all teams. This was proper rugby, with the ball being fiercely contested and all teams looking to play expansively at every chance. There were some great tries scored today by all teams - arguably we had the best with James/Danny combining to pull off a brilliant try against Sidcup in the last game. Our boys played extremely well, particularly pleasing was their ball handling which arguably was the best of the teams in our league. We got off to a great start winning comfortably (5-0) against a slow to start Westcombe Park, met our match when playing Cranbrook losing narrowly 0-1, rallied well to play great, determined rugby to beat a big Bromley side (2-0) and then just getting pipped (1-2) in an 'all or nothing' match against our great rivals Sidcup. This meant that we ended up in a creditable third place in our league which was on balance a fair result. Cranbrook eventually went down 0-2 to Old Dartfordians in the final with Sidcup claiming the plate by beating Old Beccehamians 3-1.

The coaches (great to have Deri with us today) all agreed that we can take a lot of positives from the way we played. Our forwards worked hard all day often against much bigger packs, our handling was very good, most of our passes went to hand and most importantly, our support play was much better. The main difference between Cranbrook and Sidcup was at the breakdown, with our boys needing to compete a little quicker with greater intensity and agression. We are confident that we can improve in this area as long as the boys show the same sort of discipline and application at training as they showed today. Special mention to Piers for playing two great games for us even though he was feeling poorly and to Adam, Callum M and Harry Gadsby for leading the team with such enthusiasm today - we did not let our heads go down at anytime with the result that the games were really close and exciting to watch.

All in all a good start to the season so well done to all.
