On Sunday we took the whole U14 squad (or at least the 28 who are'nt injuried) to Maidstone for a fixture. Our hosts had selected 21 boys and we agreed to play three 20 minute periods. In the first period we put out a strong side, against what was a large Maidstone team with some very big forwards and strong running backs. We talked beforehand of driving up in the forwards to stuck in the defence, before moving the ball wide and after a slow start, (nothing new there) we found our feet with our forwards combining well in both the tight and loose play. We scored 4 converted tries to round out the first period 28-0 up.
Into the second period and we mixed the team up, with Maidstone scoring two good tries and OE's responding with three of their own, including an excellent switch move between Henry and Oscar in mid-field and a length of the pitch effort involving the same boys and a perfectly timed inside pass from Henry to put Oscar under the posts. The period ended 21-12 to OE's
With further change in personal during the third period, Maidstone shaded the final 20 minutes scoring another two tries to run out 12-0 winners.
The match finished 49-24 to OE's with some excellent play by both sides. All agreed that it was a hard physical game played in great spirit by the boys and made all the better by the Referee from the Kent Society who was excellent throughout.
Thanks go to Maidstone for their hospitality afterwards and an excellent morning of rugby which sets us up well for next weekends Super 10 fixture against Old Albanians.
