Fixture congestion at Eltham College meant we were on the road again and had to hire the G3 pitch at Darrick Wood for our game against Dartfordians. We fielded a B+ team with plenty of experience and were delighted by the performance from all the boys.
After a typically slow start when we focused more on watching than doing, the boys soon got into their stride. Significant improvements were in evidence in terms of tackling, lead by Josh, Ollie(s), Henry and Rufus, plus the breakdown once we started to compete and counter-ruck against a very large Dartfordian side.
The scores were level at half-time at 10 apiece thanks to tries by Oliver Courtney and Henry. The team talk and focus at half-time was on moving the ball away from the breakdown and using the forwards to punch holes in the 10 metre channel around the rucks. I have to said the second half performance was outstanding with the pick and drive working superbly and the boys making good choices in terms of when to move the ball out wide. We were also much more aggressive at the breakdown and tackled lower which paid dividends. Further tries from Beau, Rufus, Josh (x2) and Mac rounded off an excellent performance and saw us run out 35-15 winners.
MoTM went to Oliver Courtney, with excellent supporting performances from both Henry and Rufus.
Next weekend we have Maidstone B for a fixture and joint training so this was great preparation for that.
