1947 - 2021

It is with deep hearts that we must tell you that Paul passed away on Saturday 13th November. He was in Whiston hospital where he had been fighting Covid for several weeks. He died peacefully in his sleep surrounded by his 3 children Tim, Nick and Lucy and his wife Lynn.

Paul (or as his friends amicably called him “NOWTY NEWNS”) played rugby when hookers had to strike for the ball. He was good enough to often take the ball on the opposition put in. In his later playing days he ran a 4th XV using his little black book to bring out players. His team would often have given the 1stXV a good run for their money. He also ran a vets XV at the Chester vets tournament winning the competition on one occasion.
He ran the bar for some time using the appearance of the brewery rep as an excuse to quit training early.

He lately said he was years ahead of his time as he ended up on the wing as hookers do today. He was still there however from putting the ball in at a previous lineout.

Paul was Club President from 1982 to 1988 and was also one of the original 4 Trustees of the Club

Once his playing days were over he continued to come to the club despite no longer living on the Wirral and sponsored the club.

After playing rugby he became an avid golfer playing several times a week. His association with Oldershaw school and club lasted for 63 years.

He will be sadly missed and fondly remembered.

Thanks to Doug Farnworth for the words.
