OH win against Fullers

Saturday 29th September saw Old Haberdashers travelled away from home to take on the mighty Fullerians. A fixture that has provided spectacular games in the past did not disappoint with little blood lost between the two sides.

Fullerians started the game well, with the their pack showing an early dominance mauling the ball up the pitch putting the Haberdashers on the back foot. After defending well for the first five minutes, Habs cleared the ball out of their 22 only to be fielded well by the Fullerians lock. A sonny bill offload out of the tackle saw Fullerians’ 14 march down the pitch only to be pulled down 15 meters from the line. Continued pressure on the Habs’ own try line eventually saw Fullerians score the first try of game, taking the lead. 5-0.

Unfortunately for Fullerians this early score was to be the only score of theirs for the entire game. Old Habs were quick to bounce back and get into their stride, playing with a good structure and getting their big ball carries on the ball. Consistent pressure saw Habs awarded a penalty just outside Fullerians’ 22. Ian Mcghee stepped up, slotted it. 5-3.

Despite missing the large physical presence of Charlie Johnson and Tom Solis, the OH backline was filled with style and panache. Putting the ball through the hands like poetry in motion it wasn’t long before the floodgates opened. Conor Micheals got the ball 15 meters out, a bit of magical footwork and he was in, in the corner. 8-5 Habs take the lead.

The Habersashers pack has been a dominant force in this season, and Saturday was no different. With a total of approximately 1,000 scrums in the first half, the Fullerians front row looked like they were permanently in reverse. Half way through the first half, Habs had a scrum on the Fullerians 22. Another solid scrum gave McGhee the platform to sell the dummy and skip over the try line for another score. 15-5 Haberdashers.

Further front foot ball provided by good carrying up front allowed Habs to continue to pile the pressure on Fullerians in the latter stages of the first half. Impressively Habs continued to keep ball and gain good ground. Eventually the ball was spin out wide to find an entire backline consisting of the front five forwards. The ball eventually found its way to Cian who decided to drag the opposition winger over 10 meters to the try line. 20-5 Habs.

The second half was more of the same. Strong defense from the kick-off further frustrated the opposition allowing Habs to capitalize on their mistakes. The returning Josh Downie and James Clarke added to the score line after the break adding yet another to their impressive try tallies this season. Putting the final nail in the coffin was left to Cian who managed to charge over again for his second of the afternoon.
