Saturday the 14th September, the weather was fabulous and Croxdale Road was looking great for its first game of the season. The first home game of 2019 also coincided with Ladies Day which added to the occasion / spectacle that was to come.
The game started well for Old Habs and it became clear early on who the dominant outfit were. Some powerful running and slick handling in the centres, including flair link up play between forwards and backs, contributed towards a try from Josh Downie and an equally as impressive one from Charlie Johnson. Followed by a typical line busting run from Briff, who ran diagonally across the pitch from a crash ball off the back of the line out to score in the corner. I believe Briff scored another spectacular try of sorts. However, the forwards wanted to have their say as well, which ended in a Monkey try from a drive-over – arguably the best try of the lot. Ian McGhee also slotted a 3 pointer to make the score 36-0 at half time.
The game seemed to have already been won, but a good performance in the second half with tries from McGhee and special guest for the day, a certain Simon Miller – rolling back the years, to capitalised a fine day had by all. There was a consolation try thrown in for the visitors in the last play of the game.
The 2nd half was marred somewhat by a slight scuffle in the game. However, this was only a minor disturbance, as Sam Fish got a pint of beer thrown over him for mouthing off to the travelling supporters. Somewhat deserved, and it was a white t-shirt which made very (un)pleasant viewing of his shoddy rig.
