1st Team, maintained their 100% unbeaten record to overcome bottom side Stanningley 38-nil at Higginshaw Road.

Saints hit the mark within ninety seconds, scrum-half Mickey Diveney taking the ball up to the Stanningley line before off-loading to Chris Carter who touchdown at the right corner flag, Kiel Lancashire landed the touchline conversion.

Five minutes later, hooker Tom Sharp snapped up a loose ball to race away leaving the Saints defence behind him, only to spill the ball over the line. That was the only time the west Leeds side troubled a rampant Saints side.

Approaching the end of the first quarter, Lancashire sent the Stanningley defence the wrong way before putting centre David Harris in at the left corner.

Nathan Jewitt, after some slick passing from Eric Johnson and Diveney was denied a try under the posts on the intervention of the referee’s assistant for a forward pass in play.

Diveney caused all sorts of problems for the visitors, and on twenty three minutes provided a try for his former Waterhead team mate Alan Williamson, sending a long ball from the base of the scrum for the winger to slide in at the corner for a 16-nil lead.

On the half hour mark, Stanningley sent on the big boys in the hope of stemming Saints dominance, but, it proved pointless. Saints front row pair Carl Fields and Simon Topping showed no mercy in both attack and defence.

A freak hailstorm five minutes before the break brought an early end to the half, as both teams took refuge in the changing rooms. Conditions didn’t improve after the break and both sides were unable to complete their sets due to a slippery rain sodden ground.

Ten minutes in to the second half, winger Josh Denbeigh broke clear from his own half for a brilliant solo try.

With many of the fans taking sanctuary in the clubhouse due to the weather, they missed a thrilling climax with Saints running in three further tries. The first involved Lancashire and Carter paving the way for Greg Worrall to squeeze in at the corner, followed by Lancashire hacking the ball down field for Harris to get a hand on the ball before it crossed the bye-line. The final score was a classic, Jordan White and Johnson inter-passing the ball and drawing in defenders for the Saints hooker to go in under the posts two minutes from time, Lancashire added the goals and take the man-of-the-match award,

This was Saints best start since the 2005-06 season, although the next two games will be testers with visits to Stanley Rangers and Pilkington Recs beckoning.
