The 3s say well done to Lance Savage who started for the 1s against Malvern this week only two season ago Lance was playing in the 3rd team. This speaks much about his commitment and motivation to develop, following in the footsteps of Andre before him. Credit for the club coaches Russ & Dan for developing a player & giving him a chance. Although the 1s lost, Lance by all accounts had a good game.
The 3s headed over to a (still) sunny Shottery in Stratford. With 3 teams and a colts side out, the 3s were short of their Colts & a couple of other players who where playing for the 2s. And now missing stand out winger Callum, off to Uni - all the best from OLs & the 3s.
Jake back from honeymoon (ta for the invites!!), Chef making his first start of the season. Shottery seem to have acquired some speedy & skilful backs for the season. They threw everything they could at the 3s defence during the first half.
The forwards lead by Deano & Ollie did a superb job, whilst Pat organised the backs. Rich managed a Roy Keane-esque tackle to give Shottery a penalty to make it 3-0. Another penalty to go 6-0. A sustained attack by OLs camped on the Shottery 22 ended when the ref missed illegal play on the ground with the ball bobbling out to the Shottery backs with their centre running the rest of the pitch to score. 11-0.
With the 3s keen to give everyone a run out, subs were made at the break. Brian, Simmsy, Les, Jase, all getting good game time. Simmsy his usual belligerent self, and Les showing a glimpse of his alter ego Sonny Bill Grafton.
Shottery with their large squad capitalised on mistakes in defence to score a number of tries, with their standout young centre getting a hat trick. The 3s kept plugging away, with Jamie slicing his way through to get one back. Final move of the game saw some great recycled ball, hands through the backs to see Cawail run straight (had to happen some time) to the corner.
Final score 40-14 to Shottery. Lots of positives, and some lessons to be learnt. Jamie had a great game at 10, playing well with Trev at scrum half. Pat lead the defecne well having got off a plane 2 hours earlier & set up both tries. Top tackling & pack play from Deano, Ollie, Rich.
Man of Match goes to Bodders. Put in a tighthead with no notice, he had an excellent game, against an experienced Shottery front row. Without having to worry about lineouts Bodders enjoyed himslef and should go on to make that position his. He saved the game from passive scrums.
Diva of the Day goes to Jason Ashley. He turned up with floppy hair tied up, looking like a cross between Tom Cruise (Last Samurai) and David Beckham (circa 2005). Get it sorted, or an alice band is on it`s way.
Always nice to play Shottery who are very much a social one team club. Good bunch of lads who play the right way. Next week Newbold at home.
