Old Leamingtonians RFC 1st XV v Bromyard 1st XV League: Midlands 3 West (South) Venue: Clive Richards Sports Ground, Bromyard Result: Old Leamingtonians RFC 1st XV 41 - 0 Bromyard 1st XV

Old Leamingtonians continued the winning start to the season with an eighth straight victory over a hard-working Bromyard fifteen that caused considerable problems that required periods of strong defence to keep the home score line to zero. It was not until the final ten minutes that the OL’s supremacy came to the fore with well worked tries that opened a decisive victory.
The match kicked off in bright sunshine with a strong wind blowing across the pitch and OL’s decided to play with the wind at their backs for the first half. The game plans of both teams were soon apparent with OL’s playing a running game and Bromyard electing to play a forward driven crash ball game but it OL’s forwards that came out on top in the first quarter of the game. After 10 minutes of the half the OL’s gained good ground into the home side half of the field and from a line out ten metres from the Bromyard goal line, good ball was won, and the Bromyard pack was driven back for back row Reece Jones to touch down the first try. The conversion was pushed wide.
The game was evenly matched, but it was the OL’s defence to every Bromyard attempt to penetrate the visitors lines the ensured that the home side fell short of scoring. The Bromyard stand-off repeatedly gave his three quarters good ball but every attempt to break the OL’s defence was met with strong resistance, and 10 minutes from the half time whistle OL’s won possession in their own half and a sweeping three-quarters move ended with wing Archie Semple crossing wide out in the left quarter of the field to double OL’s points. The conversion was missed but OL’s reached half time with a 10 points lead.
Bromyard began the second half with a sustained onslaught on the OL’s and the first ten minutes of the half saw OL’s in their own 22 metre area resolutely defending with outstanding defence and it was OL’s that scored the next with a breakout from defence, a fast three-quarter and forward combination that went the length of the field before winger Joe O’Loghlen touched down to increase OL’s lead. Henry Reynolds converted.
This score seemed to trigger the OL’s into another gear and both forwards and backs began to combine to create problems that Bromyard had no answer to. Further tries followed, all from sweeping three-quarter moves following strong forward pressure that created space and openings. Tries followed, first from Adam Stannard, then stand-off David Canning, Adam Stannard again for his second try and to cap a superb performance the final try giving Adam Stannard his hat trick for the match winning him OLs Man of the Match. With one further conversion the final score of 0 – 41 was recorded in OL’s favour.
This was another fine all-round performance from OL’s with the only downside being the number of penalties conceded when in good attacking positions. Reece Jones enjoyed a fine game as did Adam Stannard, but every player played his part in another well-earned victory to maintain the place at the top of the league.
