Old Northamptonians welcomed high-flying Letchworth RFC to Billing Road in what was likely to be a tough assignment against the the leagues 2nd placed side. The match also marked the halfway stage of the season. It didn’t take long for Letchworth to get onto the score sheet, scoring within the first 4 mins and it didn’t get any better for ONs who found themselves 26-0 down within 20 mins. Tries coming at regular intervals (4 mins - non converted; 10 mins - converted; 13 mins - converted; 19 mins - converted). Letchworth, playing as a team with class in all areas, had definitely cemented their foundations. However, ONs continued prodding away and were rewarded in the 24th minute when Ollie Kirkman went over in the ‘Balcony’ corner to make it 5-26, with the conversion missed. However, Letchworth regained their composure and went over themselves from the re-start on 26 mins, conversion good for 5-33 and again after 33 mins to take it to half-time at 5-40. ONs came out the strongest after half-time and slightly reduced the deficit. With ONs playing up the ‘slope’, the ball was moved across the pitch from right to left with Jake Diggin receiving the ball out wide with his back to the line, but a sweet spin saw him go over, with the conversion missed, 10-40. With the clock ticking over, it was then Captain Ben Rivans turn to go over at the base of the posts having picked up the ball 22 metres out, he drove towards the line accompanied by a Letchworth player, who was unable to delay his advance. Conversion good, 17-40 with 74 mins gone. Not to be outdone, Letchworth finished of their scoring with 3 minutes remaining with another try, conversion missed, 17-45 and that was that. Going down 26-0 in the first 20 mins didn’t help the course, but the team showed some real character in the 2nd half and ended up winning that half by 12-5, but the damage had already been done. Man of the Match - George Hudson who put in a fantastic all round performance
