Fourth defeat in a row

OLD NORTHAMPTONIANS 17-31 TOWCESTRIANS

The ONs suffered their fourth consecutive defeat when beaten by Tows 31-17 at Billing Road on Saturday. They led 7-5 at half time and 17-12 after fifty five minutes but three tries, two of them converted, in the following fifteen minutes took the visitors to their victory. The ONs were guilty of once again aimlessly kicking away far too much possession and Tows repeatedly ran the ball back with purpose to breach the first line of defence.

Joe Harrison came in at full back with Billy North moving to the wing and Kieran O’Conner partnered Alex Crofts in the centre.Chris Reid and Max Wortley resumed In the second row,Greg Pieterse in the back row and Mark Edwards,Dave Irvine and Zac Draper in the front row.The replacements were Adam Civil,Sam Howes and Craig Stewart.

Tows took an early lead after the ONs had kicked off playing up the Billing Road slope when Craig Holton picked up from the base of a scrum to bundle over.Marley Wolfenden and Kieran O’Connor combined to move the ONs forward and after Tows had conceded successive penalties, a well rehearsed and executed move saw Billy North came off his wing to slice through the midfield defence untouched and Ben Rivans added the conversion.Shortly after Tows were denied a try when they were penalised for crossing allowing the ONs to clear the danger but when the visitors again infringed Rivans pushed his penalty attempt wide.Back came Tows and Cameron Young was forced into touch just short of the ONs line while at the other end the home side three times wasted possession with misdirected kicks allowing Tows to relieve the pressure.A final attack of the half saw Tows again penalised for obstruction as the score remained 7-5.

As the second half opened Callum Threlfall broke several tackles to take play deep into the ONs 22 and his offload found fellow back rower Callum Jones in support,James Falvey’s conversion making the score 12-7.Rivans replied with a well struck penalty to reduce the deficit and on 55 minutes his break split the defence and Matt Watts was on hand to touch down.Rivans converted for a 17-12 ONs’ lead before nineteen unanswered points took Tows clear.Young was first over as his pace and footwork took him clear and the ONs then failed to deal with a speculative Callum Garwood kick and were forced to concede a 5 metre scrum. The initial threat was repelled but Threlfall managed to slide a kick towards the wing as he was tackled and the ball bounced up into the arms of Ben Roe who plunged over.Falvey converted both touch downs for a 26-17 lead. The ONs poured forward and looked certain to score in the shadow of the clubhouse but somehow possession was lost,a quick exchange of passes up the left touchline and Jones finished at the other end to confirm the Tows 31-17 victory.
