David ‘Taff’ Powell ??
A tribute by Dick Tyler, President, Old Patesians RFC
Everyone connected with Old Pats, as well as many others in the rugby world of Gloucestershire and beyond will be saddened, like us, to hear of the very recent loss of David ‘Taff’ Powell. We would like to offer our sincere condolences to his family and friends; he will be truly missed.
Taff’s connection with the club goes back to the 1950’s, when he played front row for the club after leaving Grammar School, alongside many others whose names feature prominently in the Club’s annals.
In later years Taff served as chairman of our Club, and was President for a grand 17 years. His contribution was much more than titular. He was the heart and soul of the club, taking huge pride in its rise through the divisions, and especially in its victory in the Intermediate Cup at Twickenham. He was a fabulous ambassador, meeting and greeting visitors to Everest Road with warmth, humour and friendship. He was also a mainstay of many away matches and tours making a full contribution to many of the anecdotes that form part of the Club’s history. Indeed, Neil Hyde remembers he was the only club member to go on all three American tours, Chicago in 1980, New Orleans in 1993 and Texas in 2013. Neil also remembers him as Father Christmas at the children’s parties and a long standing doorman in the OP marquee at Cheltenham Cricket Festivals - always in his boater in club colours. He also served on the Gloucestershire RFU Committee.
Most importantly, Taff was a friend to us all. He cared deeply about anyone who played for the Club at any level and took a keen interest in peoples lives on and off the pitch. There was always a glint in his eye, usually signalling some mischief or humour, but never, ever malice. Old Pats was a huge part of his life for over 60 years, and he was a huge part of Old Pats’ life over the same period. We will miss him immensely. Rest in peace Taff.
