Old Reds put in a decent performance against a rugged and hungry Avonmouth side. Avonmouth, who play in a very testing second team league, were clearly keen to raise morale with a big performance against local opposition. Despite Reds having a number of players unavailable, the side was boosted by the large travelling support, and the presence of the 1st team selection committee. The game was billed as a friendly, and both sides will have been happy for the 80 minutes. However, the confrontational manner of the match was less than friendly at times. New signing Michael Shcropher put in a marvellous performance at number 10. He got his kicks, played the patterns well and demonstrated a physicality not always synonymous with fly half’s. Tries were scored by Shaun McCreight, Alex Shelton and Oliver Barnett (2 tries). Tony Bray skippered the side as the second team captain was selected on the bench. He did a fine job and put in another good performance at no 8.
Nest week is an away match to the much improved Bristol Barbarians. Training this week is imperative.
