Old Redcliffians Second string continued their excellent start to the season with a hard fought victory over local rivals St Bernadettes – 36 – 0. Reds have now amassed over 150 points in conceding only one try.
Reds were forced into several changes from the side that had won the week before and were further hindered through the loss of scrum half Rob Dyer in the opening few minutes.
Playing with the slope and wind Reds went on the attack from the start and had soon breached Bernadettes defence for the first of their 6 tries scored by Dave Harris. However, Reds were unable to make their superiority or the conditions count and did not add to this score even though they were in total command.
Reds scummaging and strength in open play always provided their back line with good ball and with Simon Mortimer and Dave Harris in the centre Reds pack always had a target in front of them to drive. The back row of Scott Coster, Scott Blankley and Wayne McMillan took advantage of this and outplayed their Bernadettes counterparts. Hooker James Fairfield also had an excellent game in the loose which was capped off with a well earned try.
Turning round 7 – 0 up at half time Reds played the conditions very well in the second half and added to their first half tries through Mark Caddick, Paul Todd, Wayne McMillan, Mark Ward and James Fairfield.
Remaining top of the league is vital for Reds seconds but with some tough trips coming up they will need to continue with their current good form.
