Old Redcliffians lost an entertaining encounter at Scotland Lane and will be disappointed with the final result, first half errors gifting the visitors two tries, that in the end cost the home side victory.

On a blustery day with a strong wind blowing across the field it was the home side that had the slope for the first period and started in great fashion. Reds opened the scoring as early as the second minute through outside half Kieran Hill, on hand to touch down after some great approach play and he also added the extras with a well-judged conversion. However, the lead was short lived and within two minutes Bury levelled things up, a home chip kick being charged down for fly half Nick Perez to cross under the posts, the score being converted by Cameron Ritchie. Old Reds, looking strong in the scrum forced Bury back in to earn a penalty, which they kicked to touch in the 22. Another penalty took play to the corner where hooker Kieran Ward scored from a neat move at the front the lineout with Hill again converting.

Three minutes on saw another massive Reds scrum, this time against the head, with number eight Ethan Doyle, back from injury, showing his strength and muscling over for the try and with Hill adding the extras and Reds were looking strong. But it was Bury who were on the board next, with an arcing run to the line and round under the posts by wing Finlay Sharp, converted by Ritchie closing the gap to 7 points. Reds, despite losing their scrum half Kiyan Wiltshire to a yellow card carried the ball well again to the try line but were deemed to be held up; from the dominant scrum that followed a penalty try awarded to the home team and Bury prop Andrea Pozzi was yellow carded the bonus point came the home sides way with little over half an hour gone. Adventurous but carefree home play allowed the wolf packs winger Sharp to score again, following an intercept, with the extras from Ritchie to leave it 28 – 21 to Old Redcliffians at half-time. The lead would have been more if not a couple of errors, deep in home territory, which kept Bury St Edmunds in the game at the break.

With Bury using the bench well to reorganise their front row pressure told after half time; now playing down the hill they attacked and eventually second row Mikey Graham scored, from another well-worked lineout play, Ritchie on the spot again with the extras to draw his side level ten minutes into the second period. Both sides continued to attack at every opportunity but defences were on top in the middle of the second half. Reds mounted a sustained period of play going into the final ten minutes but found Bury hard to break down, from penalties they scrummaged looking for a try close to the line but couldn’t find away over, replacement backrower Tui Uru making an impact from the bench for the visitors. A charge down couldn’t be regathered with the line begging and despite further attacks it looked like the Redcliffians pressure had come to nothing with Bury breaking away. Yet the hosts worked back up the hill and they were awarded a midfield penalty. Hill stepped up and judged the wind well to edge his side 3 points in front with just over three minutes to play.

However there was a heart breaking finale to the game as Bury piled forward and despite some last ditch Reds defence they managed a final play try through centre Mark Kohler, following sustained pressure, crossing under the posts, with Ritchie converting with the last kick to the joy of the travelling support and disgust of the home followers.

Reds will look back on the game and consider it as points dropped on a day when a couple of errors proved costly.
