Dave was secretary of the club from 1984 to 2001 but will more recently be remembered for his work with the club’s junior section.
He started with the Juniors soon after its formation in 2004 as mini junior Fixture Secretary following ill health and being confined to a wheelchair.
He became Chairman of Mini and Juniors in 2008, replacing Glen Cockroft, until 2024.
Because of his disability the junior section became a new lease of life for Dave and he threw his heart and soul into helping to make the juniors the success which it has become.
Dave came to the club in the 1970s and played on the lower teams. He formerly played with Stockwood Park RFC, Luton. He was a keen No 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 or anywhere else he was needed. He was one of the players who could be relied on to fill in anywhere. And when a Vets team was formed he was one of the original members.
While secretary, Dave was the one who developed and ran the club’s first website. He always made sure that match reports and other events went on the site as soon as possible and if it was late he was always there to hurry it along with an email or phone call.
In the case of match reports they had to wait until he returned home after spending Sunday mornings at the club watching junior matches. He was still a regular visitor then, only needing someone to help get his wheelchair in and out of the car.
Dave was well known in wider rugby circles too and became the Yorkshire RFU webmaster in 2010.
Dave Butler was a stalwart of the club, both as a player and administrator. His work with the juniors also earned him praise in Yorkshire rugby. And who can forget Dave’s memorable reports on the juniors to the AGM, which usually made the meetings last half an hour longer.
Until his mobility issues, Dave was always a great companion at the bar and will be sadly missed.
