Old Streetonians Vets team win the first round of the Middlesex Vets Cup

Street took to the pitch on Friday evening in horrendous conditions to defend the cup against a combined side of Teddington and Old Isleworthians. Isleworthians had requested that they should be allowed more than the regulation 20 players and in the spirit of the game Old Street agreed optimistically assuming we would have 20 players ourselves. The game kicked off with just 15 players against their growing squad of 30. Postie was uncharacteristically late and Helmet en-route delayed at work. Street playing in to the gale very quickly scored out wide with George Burrell going over the line and Tom Puggy Pugh converting from the touchline. It was just before the half that the opposition got on the score board going in level at half time 7-7.
With the wind behind us in the second half Street pinned the Teddington and O.I’s in their half but with the clocking ticking and the opposition abundance of subs the scoreline was locked. It was at this point that the realisation dawned on the coaching team that extra time in the atrocious conditions was a distinct possibility. So the advice was given to kick the points at any opportunity.
Fortunately two opportunities arose as the referee awarded two penalties but from difficult positions given the conditions. Puggy was more than up to it and judged the two kicks perfectly
Final score 7-13. The Legends march on.
