“ Tabard FC 29 pts --- Verulamians RFC 10 pts
On what was a really dreadful weather afternoon – freezing cold rain throughout with a chill factor breeze blowing down the length of the pitch, 30 brave souls, a referee and two line judges endured 80 minutes of punishing yet entertaining rugby with Tabard running out winners with a bonus point to maintain their 4th position in the London NW 3 League.
But at half time with the score at 10 – 10 either side could have taken the initiative and won. As it was Tabard did in the opening 10 mins of the second half by being more aggressive and direct out of the starting blocks by punching two goals close into the posts. Try as Vees did to fight their way out of their half they could not. and by letting their fast left winger loose virtually on the final whistle Tabard secured their win.
With yet another vastly changed side from the previous week against Datchworth RFC, and strengthened by a central back division of Woods, Cameron and Seymour aided and abetted by rookey 18 year old Tom Shenton together with Joe Baker and the robust Callum, Vees in the first half more than held their own and through pressure gained an early penalty and then a penalty try to at one stage lead 10 – 5, only to see that vanish on the stroke of half time.
Overall a courageous performance and evidence that with a fair wind Verulamians can become a force to be reckoned with after the New Year celebrations are out of the system.
The next League game is at home against the useful OLD STREETONIANS RFC side – KO 2 pm at Cotlandswick – on Jan 5th ‘’
