Verulamians RFC –15pts ---- Cheshunt RFC 39 pts
This was as game Vees were targeting as a possible result in our favour as Cheshunt RFC were only a few places above us. But it was not to be. In the end the result was 39 – 15 against. You have to acknowledge that we were once again fielding a XV where many willing hands were playing out of position. They all put up a good fight. There were many positives in individual performances and with 50 mins of play we were in a good position 17 - 15 to force a very close finish. Great individual performances from Joe Seymore and Josh Lawence in the centre. Both scored strong, aggressive running tries and James Ryan ( only 19 ) at scrum – half and Charlie Woods – Jones at fly – half had impressive games with Charlie kicking some fine goals. The return of Tim Fretter added some necessary punch with Joe Baker and Sam Perry down the middle and Callum Porter secured some important ball in the lineout. However early in the first half it was evident that the Cheshunt full back, if given free reign, would be a constant threat with outsides who could convert his powerful runs into points,
And so it was to be.
The other important fact is that Cheshunt RFC are the proud possessors of a RFU 4G 365 all weather, flood lit pitch which automatically speeds up the game. The referee’s performance was also testimony to that. But they did not answer the sudden plethora of missed tackles, basic pressure in set piece scrums and some wayward kicking which contributed greatly in the last 30 mins to Vees running out 39 -15 to the second half better side. One should also add Cheshunt’s goal kicker could have taken the score to beyond 50, but thankfully he was often off target.
VRFC next play League leaders London Welsh Amateurs RFC away at Deer Park on Dec 1st. This will be a stern test, but next week there is no game. Time for injuries to heal and availability to improve. ‘’
