In the first of two pre season games the 1st XV travelled down to Whitstable RFC in a great test for the club. Having won Kent 2 last year they faced the challenge of Whitstable who had come down from Kent 1.
A baking hot Saturday with a concrete ground underfoot was the setting and the Old Boys set out their stall early on. An early interception try from centre Remy "Ranga" Holmes got the ball rolling and this was followed by tries from his ginger partner Daz Finn, Jack "Magician" Packwood, Tom "Tim" Holland and Tim "The Entertainer" Abbott. Captain Callum Bowie added four conversions.
In the second half the Old Boys, in their own words, didn't really show up and Whitstable came back into the game. With the loss of Vice Captain Chris "Dawson" Norris to that agonising Old Wills injury known as "me knee" the hosts began a comeback. Adding three tries of their own, a penalty and two conversions the game finished 33-22 to the visitors.
A hard thought win by the Old Wills and an excellent platform to move on from into the next fixture against Gillingham Anchorians who play a division above our 1st XV.
Man of the match was awarded by Whitstable to scrum half Will Burton and the players awarded theirs to Remy Holmes.
Up the Willies!
