Old Williamsonians vs Crowborough RFC Saturday 08/09/2018
The old boys kicked off their league season on Saturday verus a strong Crowborough team, both teams having won their respective home fixtures last season.
The game started quick, with the OWs running hard lines down the hill with the wind behind them. The first try came as the OWs used an effective maul near the opposition line and with Reece price going over. Shortly after this, a strong scrum by the OWs near the Crowborough try line gave the backs a good attacking platform and Tom Bishop waltzed in under the posts. The last try in the first half for the old boys came as Pat Edgcumbe pinballed off Crowborough defenders and crossed the white line. Bowie kicked ⅔ conversions.
The third try galvanised Crowborough. Sloppy play from the OWs gave Crowborough a scrum deep in the OWs half. The scrum dominance switched and a good push allowed Crowborough to get over the white wash. Crowborough then used an effective pick and go game to score 2 further tries. Scores were level at 19-19 at half time.
The old boys started the second half strongly with a strong break from Lawrence Chittil, allowing Chris Foot to deftly touch down for Old wills fourth and the bonus point 24-19. Injuries then caused the OWs to shuffle the line up. Will Burton now playing in the centres ran a short crash line to score the fifth 29-19. Crowborough then showed a lot of fight and spirit to score a good team try, the kick converted 29-26. This then led to a nervey finish as Crowborough almost scored of the last play, but the OWs held out to win the game.
With the 5 points in the bag the OWs head into an away fixture vs newly promoted Vigo next Saturday looking to add to their first win.
