Old Wimbledonians 19 Old Georgians 25

The Old Boys suffered another unnecessary defeat on Saturday to an average Old Georgian fifteen.

This week saw a further seven team changes compared to last week's side ; but the team got off to a sharper start scoring a mauling forward try in the fifth minute following good progress by the backs. Tom Harwood converted Nick Hulat's try. However, soon after, a lapse in midfield allowed the visiting stand-off to break a tackle, feed outside to the left , for the Georgian winger to score in the corner. This try was not converted. Worse was to come from an Old Boys own scrum five metres out ; the home team were pushed backwards and a scrambled pass back was dropped over the line for a visiting flanker to touch down. This time the Georgian kicker added the conversion points. Despite giving away a penalty for handling in a ruck the home forwards were showing more life and from a penalty kick to touch mauled the Georgian pack back to their own line. However, the opposition defended well and play swung to the other end. From an attacking move out of defence full-back Harwood pulled a hamstring muscle and had to be helped from the field. Just prior to the interval a desperate attempt to make an ill-judged pass under pressure saw the ball presented to the grateful Georgian winger who ran thirty yards to score an unconverted try.

At 20 pts - 7 pts down at the break the game was still not lost if the Old Boys could raise their game. They did so and notched two good tries without reply. The first resulted from a training ground move with skipper Rory Southgate crashing over beside the posts. The conversion narrowly missed. Further pressure from the OWs pack with just twelve minutes to go saw the pack go over the opposition line as a unit with Rory Forward credited with the touchdown. This try was converted by George Fairbairn , and suddenly the momentum was with the home team. However, in injury time the Georgians made the game safe taking advantage of some tired tackling to score their fourth
and bonus point try. The Old Boys gained a losing bonus point from this result, but were disappointed with this insufficient reward.

Next Saturday sees a Cup match against Sittingbourne from Shepherd Neame League Kent 1 at Coombe Lane with a 2.00 p.m. K.O.
