Old Wimbledonians 17 Old Mid whitgiftians 22

The old boys frittered away a game that should have been theirs for the taking on Saturday.

After a brilliant start , when No10 Lewis Taylor scythed outside his opposite number and handed on to skipper Rory Southgate who touched down unopposed to open the scoring ,
the O W s were not able to add to their score until ten minutes from the end. In between times the visitors scored twenty-two unanswered points. The return of Steve Duggan for his first club game of the season added much drive forward and aided by Joe Bell provided plentiful lineout ball. Two incisive breaks from George Fairbairn and Southgate once more
kept play mostly in the MidWhitgiftian territory. Sadly, the OW malaise of giving away frequent penalties ruined much good all round work and forward progress was often sacrificed. The visitors levelled the scores midway through the half from a strike against the
Wimbledonian head and pushover. With a level scoreboard at the interval all was to play for.

An early penalty to Old Midwhitgiftians was followed by a penalty try awarded against an O W player for a late tackle with the ball about to cross the dead ball line. Another try ensued to the visitors , again from an irresistible forward drive. However , a fifteen point deficit saw the home team proceed to play some of their best and most adventurous rugby of the match. An excellent try was scored by Jay Tabb out on the left following some superb interpassing between Taylor , Fairbairn and Southgate. Tabb scorched past his man on the outside and followed with the conversion. He later added a penalty to earn his side a losing bonus point. But despite further pressure around the visiting twenty-two no more chances
could be capitalised on.

The next three weeks provide consecutive must-win matches if the league season is to come back on track.
