Another losing Bonus Point.

The Old Boys went down on Saturday to a large and powerful Amplefordian side who scored five tries to their one, each a result of a forward drive from close range. However, OW s maintained their record of securing a losing bonus point in each but one of their matches lost.
The early exchanges favoured the visitors who with some delightful play from the backs advanced into the Amplefordian twenty-two. Good runs by Jason Murphy and skipper Rory Southgate kept the home team on the defensive. Sadly, minor infringements and knock-ons prevented a score accruing. During this first half frequent foul play from the home team enabled full-back Jay Tabb to keep the scoreboard ticking over with five successful penalty goals. However, the Old Boys defence crumbled three times in the half under pressure, twice from well organised forward mauls.
Nevertheless, at half-time OWs were still in the game with a mere two point deficit at 15-17.
The second period got under way with the opposition progressing well into OW territory. It wasn't long before their extra bulk and power, both in forwards and backs, took them into the left corner where they scored two forceful tries, converting the second. Between these tries Jay Tabb converted his sixth penalty for more home indiscretion. However, the Old Boys showed much fight with the introduction of Dan Triplett and Angus Fairbairn who led from the front. OW s harassed a tiring Amplefordian pack and were rewarded with a well worked try from Jason Murphy alongside the posts with just eight minutes of the game remaining. The Old Boys determination brought two further half chances which could not be capitalised upon.
Mention should be made of outstanding all round performances from Nick Hulatt at No 8 and Richard Travers at scrum-half.
Not a bad display from OWs in light of the fact that a poor refereeing decision in not awarding a penalty try for an Amplefordian high tackle when No 10 Lewis Taylor was close to touching down for a brilliant individual try cost the visitors the points that would have secured the match.
