Back to Winning Ways

After an exploratory first fifteen minutes spent mostly in the
Wimbledonian half, the home team gradually got on top and
in the next fifteen minutes plentiful possession coming back
quickly from the rucks and mauls provided three converted
tries.
Firstly, stand-off Lewis Taylor jinked over from close range
on the right, then Jason Murphy sprinted over from forty
yards out-pacing both winger and full back in the process
and a while later left winger Paddy Donaghy ghosted
through a melee of players with several side-steps off
both feet simultaneously to touch down. Each try was
converted by the reliable boot of full back Jason Murphy. A
penalty goal for not releasing added to a thorough first half
performance by the old boys.
The home team started the second period considering the
game almost won and were slow to recover their first half
form. Old Blues scored a good try from a lineout and drive,
and after a further few minutes another good try brought the
score to 24-12 to the old boys with still thirty minutes
remaining.
However, a brilliant solo effort from Alex Moulton, who
sprinted like a gazelle twenty-five yards to the line for a try
which the reliable Jason Murphy once again converted
settled the nerves of the worried touchline support. One
further try to the visitors just before the end could not
detract from a more than satisfactory overall performance.
James Howell and Lewis Taylor got quick ruck possession
away well and kept the back line moving slickly and with
incisive incursions from the returning Jason Murphy the unit
tested Old Blues. Another improving performance from
Jordan Hawthorn at tight head prop, supported by Mike
Jones on the loose head steadied the scrummage which did
not retreat at all.
Next Saturday's game against Old Walcountians is another
must win game. Our opponents are in fifth place in the
league and at home, so only our No 1 side will be good
enough!
