Match report

This week Old Windsor were in league action again taking on Frontline at home. We knew that this would be a difficult game having already played Frontline this season in the cup which saw us squeak through with a last minute goal.

The team news this week saw a few changes. Lex came in at right back for Rory, which saw Scouse move over to left back, Ric came in to the holding midfield for the injured Luke and James A came in to the front three in place of Calvin. Once again Old Windsor had their full quota of 5 subs with Bolding coming back in after his suspension, along with Mike, Jordan, Nick and Dan.

The game started well for Old Windsor who were playing against a strong breeze in the first half. After about 5 minutes the early pressure almost led to a goal when Walts went through one on one with the Frontline keeper. The keeper made a good save, but it was an opportunity that shouls have given us a lead.

OW didn’t have to wait long for the lead though as a Walts corner was headed down by Shorty to Joe who smashed the ball into the back of the net. 1-0 to Old Windsor and to be honest Frontline had hardly been in our half at this time.

OW were still looking lively going forward, but started to get sloppy with the ball in the middle of the park which encouraged Frontline forward and they started to get a foothold in the game without creating much. When the chance did fall to Frontline though they took the opportunity clinically. A throw in saw Frontline play a one two, get to the touchline and put a good cross into the box, the striker finished nicely to pull the game back to 1-1.

Old Windsor saw their other chances in the first half come and go. Sean had a couple of chances one of which he hit well just wide of the post and the other he hit over where he should have been working the keeper.

Half time saw a scorline of 1-1.

After a few harsh words at half time Old Windsor came out for the second half looking much more like themselves. Within 5 minutes of half time they had a big opportunity to take the lead when Anthony was fouled in the area and OW awarded a penalty. With Luke out injured and a few other penalty takers not available the opportunity was handed to Walts to give us the lead. The keeper guessed the right way and easily saved the penalty.

Walts more than made up for the miss with our second goal of the game though. James passed him the ball and from inside his own half Walts went on a run down the line with the Frontline lads not being able to get close to him. He found himself in one on one with the keeper and this time he made no mistake in calmly slotting the ball into the back of the net. 2-1 Old Windsor.

Five minutes later it seemed like game over when a Shorty free kick flew over the Frontline defence and bounced nicely for Sean who headed over the keeper who had come rushing off his line. 3-1 Old Windsor.

OW only had themselves to blame for not finishing the game off. Bolding who pressed the Frontline defence well went through one on one with the keeper who saved well. Frontline then went down the other end and with their first real attack of the second half got themselves back into the game with a good finish from the striker into the far corner of the goal.

OW were in for a nervous final 10 minutes in a game that should have been all over. And to be fair to Frontline they started to really push for an equaliser. To be honest they didn’t have much in terms of chances, but were seeing a lot of the ball in the OW half. On 85 minutes however OW did finally seal the three points when Nick scored his first goal for the club, the ball fell nicely for him and from about 20 yards out on his weaker left foot he hit the ball sweetly into the corner of the goal.

Full time Old Windsor 4-2 Frontline.

This really is a pleasing result, as last year this is the sort of game that would have seen us drop points. It keeps our good run going which is important with two difficult looking cup ties in the next couple of weeks. Firstly we take on Crowthorne next week in the QF of the Maidenhead and Norfolkian cup, and that’s followed by a local derby with Wraysbury in the last 16 of the Slough Town cup. Two massive games for the club where I hope to have all players available to put in good performances against two very good sides.
