Match report

Old Windsor took on Richings Park this weekend looking to get back to winning ways after a poor performance again KS Gryth the previous week. Luke was running the side with Gary away with work and with a small squad we knew that we were in for a tough afternoon.

Old Windsor went with the usual formation of 3-5-2 with Elliot filling in at RWB the back 3 of Pilch, Loz and Gav and Matty H moving to LWB. The midfield 3 were Luke, Challis and Rory. James and Sean started up top.

Old Windsor started the game well and after 2 minutes went 1-0 up. Some good build up play down the left hand side saw James pass the ball to Luke who struck the ball nicely from about 30 yards which beat the keeper, who will think that he should have done better with it.

It was hard to play any football in the middle of the pitch so OW decided to try and turn the RP defence by using James and Seans pace. To be fair the RP defence struggled to get near the two lads up top who just did not stop running, and this looked the most likely way of a second goal coming.

After 15 mins RP were on level terms with a poor penalty decision by the ref. There was no doubt at all about the foul, the problem was it was about 2 yards outside the box, the ref originally gave a freekick only to change his mind and give a penalty. The RP striker stepped up and put the ball into the bottom corner, 1-1.

The game did not change much after this with both teams probably not playing the best football you'll see this season, but battling hard and defending reasonably well.

Then OW thought theyd gone 2-1 up when Sean shot the keeper saved only for Rory to slide in and Sean to poke the ball home. For some reason unknown to everyone the ref gave offside (even the linesman didn't have his flag up).

After about 30 mins OW went 2-1 up from a freekick by the corner flag. Luke put the ball in and on the far post from about 3 yards out Russ headed in.

There weren't many other clear-cut chances in the first half with OW looking dangerous on the break away, but not making the most of the chances to attack.

HT 2-1

Second half and again OW came out flying. After about 50 mins they were 3-1 up. Rory launched the ball into the box over Danny who was being marked by two CBs. Challis competed for the ball well and it fell to James who put the ball into the back of the net.

RP then come into the game and picked up the tempo (as well as OW dropping right off the pace) after 55 mins the pulled a goal back to make it 3-2. The ball was crossed from the right hand side and from about 18 yards the lad headed the ball into the bottom corner off the post.

OW then got caught on the break for RP to make it 3-3 the ball was kicked over Pilch and Elliot and the left winger run through to score calmly.

An hour in and the game was all square and with only 1 sub OW were going to have to battle hard to try and get the 3 points. Going all square kicked OW into live and the chances started flowing. Russ hit the post with a header from a long throw, Russ could have been in for another, but Luke heard the call late and couldn't get out of the way of James cross which was eventually cleared off the line.

The goal did then come with what was the goal of the game. OW played some really good football down the right hand side of the pitch, with Elliot, Rory, James and Pilcher all involved in the build up. The ball came to Luke who played a good pass through to James, who had a great touch and then smashed the ball into the roof of the net.

Lex then came on for Challis for the final 20 mins and settled into the game nicely playing some good passes and getting stuck in.

OW thought they had done enough to get the 3 points then with 3 minutes to go RP lumped the ball in the air and Gav was caught a little under it, the lad at the far post took it well and we were back to all square.

OW feeling hard done by then through men forward for the winner, and with a minute left won a throw on the left hand side of the pitch. The ball was launched into the box for Danny to get his head on. It took a big deflection which sent the keeper the wrong way and the ball rolled into the corner.

Game over and a 5-4 win for the boys to take into next weeks Fielden cup Semi final against Chalvey reserves where we will have to defend a lot better if we want to reach a cup final :-)

Up the OW'sssss
