Weekly ESFL Update

Division Six

Icklesham Casuals gained their first points of the season, winning 3-1 at Hampden Park United and dumping their hosts to the bottom of the table in the process. Paul Daniels conjured up two goals for Casuals, whilst Joe Fraser hit their third. They were also able to squander a number of other opportunities, which included hitting the woodwork on two occasions. As far as United are concerned, they are going through a difficult patch at present, and badly need a regular goal-scorer to convert some of the chances they are creating. Matt Sedgwick scored their only goal with fifteen minutes left on the clock.

Hawkhurst United came from 2-0 down at the break to eventually seal a 3-2 win at home to Sedlescombe Rangers, with Ciprian Stinean scoring twice in the last ten minutes to seal an astonishing turnaround. Rangers were totally in command up to the break going ahead through Steve James and a Tommy Borthwick thirty-yard screamer, before Mark Mitchell got United back into the match on the hour mark. Whilst United will be satisfied with the fightback, Rangers will be annoyed that they have let more points drift away and will need to address their defensive frailties if their season is not to take a similar route.

Parkfield overcame a potential banana skin at home to Robertsbridge United and moved through to the next round with a 2-0 win. A goal in each half did the trick, with James Robinson giving them a tenth minute lead, before Daniel Powell sealed the tie in the fiftieth minute.

Mayfield won their match by an identical score-line at home to JC Tackleway and are now away to Hailsham Athletico in the semi-finals. In a close encounter, Simon Betteridge gave Mayfield the lead just before the break but the home side could not really feel the job was done until Tackleway sealed their fate with an own goal with just ten minutes remaining.

An extraordinary game at Grasshoppers Old Boys saw FC Westridge capitulate after the break, after holding their opponents to 0-0 at the interval. Old Boys scored no less than five times as they upped the ante, strolling to an easy victory in the end. Goals came from all areas of the pitch with Luke Ticehurst, James Holdsworth, Anthony Allen, Dan Saunders and Zac Fairweather all bagging a goal apiece.

Wayne Stone scored the perfect first-half hat-trick for Ticehurst as his side won 6-3 at AFC St Leonards. Darren Nicol also scored twice for the visitors, whilst Ed Adams hit the other. Saints will be disappointed that their three goals did not produce a different outcome, with no two performances being the same for them at the moment. Sean Casey and Dean Evans scored for the home team, whilst Luke O’Donnell will still be reliving the third, a 25 yard lob over the opposing keeper.

A volley from Scott Quested after fifteen minutes put Orington on the path to victory against visitors Punnetts Town. Billy Wood then doubled the advantage on the hour mark before Ash Keeley responded for Town to bring them back in with a chance. Dale Matthews had other ideas though and with ten minutes left hammered home a third for Orington to effectively seal the match.

Orington will be away to Battle Baptists in the semi-finals after they sealed a 3-2 victory at Wittersham. The afternoon’s activities did not start well for Baptists though as Harry Richardson and then Aaron Salmon put Wittersham 2-0 ahead after just five minutes. The visitors did come back strongly though and by half-time they were back level after first Ant Hickman, and then Aaron Jamieson found the opposition net. It was nip and tuck in the second period until, with just two minutes remaining, Callum Parker netted the winner to give Baptists their third comeback win of the season.

Two Joe Walters goals for Sandhurst were not enough as hosts Victoria Baptists ran out 6-2 winners in their cup tie. They will now be at home to Ticehurst in the next round. After a tight first forty-five minutes, the match was effectively sealed with a three goal burst in ten second half minutes from Baptists. On the score-sheet for the hosts were James Bellett (2), Jay Reynolds, Steve Gilbert, Mark Simmons and Patrick Ighavvongbe.

The final game of the round saw Hailsham Athletico sneak into the quarter-finals with a 5-4 extra-time win over visitors Sedlescombe Rangers. In a real ding-dong battle Rangers found themselves 3-1 up at the break, but could not contain the onslaught in the second half as Athletico came back strongly and scored twice to force extra-time. The home side then had more of the play in the extra 30 minutes and probably just about deserved the win in the end. Jake Barker was on fire for Athletico, notching four goals, whilst Dan Fry bagged the important fifth. Toby Hicks fired in two for Rangers, Gary Underhill got one, and there was also a goal for Ben Linklater in his last game for the club.
