Snatching victory from the jaws of defeat.

Ossett 2s made the short journey to local rivals, and 'beautiful people', Leeds Corinthians, who last season had been promoted into Ossett’s league. The pitch at the 'castle on the hill' was in good condition especially given the prolonged dry spell over the summer break. The Ossett team lacked some regulars but still had a solid core to it with some 'first times' for Sid and Morne Lowe and a return for Jack Mumford.

As was the case for most of last season, and suffering from a lack (or no) pre-season training, Ossett started very slowly allowing Leeds Corinthians to score with their first two attacks with poor tackling, a case of 'bad habits' providing simple chances for the hosts. It took Ossett 10 minutes to get into the game. Once they did, it was clear that the visitors, despite a more lightweight pack, were more mobile in the forwards and could make yards with relative ease. For the next 10-15 minutes, Ossett hogged the possession if not the territory. A penalty 10m from the home sides line provided an opportunity for Duncan Kitts to score using his familiar '2 step'. Daniel Duce got the extras. Shortly afterwards Kitts scored his second after more good forward pressure. It wasn’t long until Ossett took the lead through a quick tap and good pace from scrumhalf Daniel Bonner which made them much 'happier' with a warm 'afterglow'.

Although clearly in the ascendancy with the ball, Ossett were pretty ordinary without it, allowing Corinthians pacey backs the time and space to scythe through the defence.
The second half was more the same and Leeds opened up a commanding lead. However, Ossett fought back with a try from Lee Hemmingway being upgraded to a penalty try (thus denying Hemmingway the score). The game looked to be going the way of the home side. With the clock running down, both sides traded penalties to give the home side a commanding 38-29 lead. Hemmingway then produced a moment of magic, running away from the home sides midfield as well as his own support. Spotting that he was about to be levelled, Hemmingway kicked the ball in field where it was eventually gathered by Dan Ramsey who managed to 'dive' over the line in the cause of being tackled, a 'perfect duet' to get Ossett firmly back into the game. Duce duly converted. The kick off took place with Ossett knowing that if the ball went dead it would be the end of the game. Ossett again roared back up the pitch led by skipper Paul Westerman and debutant Morne Lowe and were gifted a penalty 30 yards out. Duce, under pressure, squeezed the ball through the uprights to give the visitors a last minute 38-39 win sending 'shivers' down the hosts spines.

Ossett were good with the ball but not 'perfect' without it. 'Thinking out loud', Mayfield and Lowe were impressive but man of the match went to Daniel Bonner who ran the game like a 'perfect symphony'. A mention too for Duce who kicked 6 out of 7 attempts at goal. The referee was excellent, controlling the game well allowing both teams to play. 'South of the border', Ossett 1s lost out to Hemsworth 10-29.
