Ossett Ladies 48-19 Beverley Ladies

Ossett welcomed Beverley for the first time at home and our first home game of 2024 on Sunday. The weather was dreary but we were just happy to get a game on as our last planned meeting was called off by storm Babet.

We were unsure what to expect from Beverley, they looked well drilled in the warm up and we knew they had age and stamina on their side but Ossett turned out in good numbers ready to face the day.

The first sniff of points came 8 minutes in when Beverley kicked the ball away which was gathered by fullback Liv who made her way promptly across the field to score the try. Izzie made a fantastic attempt at converting but the wind moved the goal posts suddenly.

Following the re-start Izzie got the ball down the line to Mikaela who promptly passed it off to Liv who once again went over the line. Unable to convert from a difficult position the score was 10-0 to Ossett.

Beverley made their way up the pitch and Ossett kept them camped out on the try line for ages with resilient defence. A few slightly high tackles later the ref had seen enough and awarded a yellow card which Vic DT copped for. With a disadvantage numerically Ossett continued to keep Beverley at bay as multiple phases were defended. Beverley eventually made it over the try line some 8 minutes later but were unable to convert.

The next kick off saw Izzie kick the ball directly at the referee. This is not something we’ve covered in training but she redeemed herself by scoring moments later and converting her own try.

Not content with just two tries, Liv went over a few minutes later for her hat trick and Izzie once again got it over the crossbar.

Beverley managed to sneak another try in just before half time giving us a midway score of 24-12.

When play resumed, Alice decided she wanted a piece of the action, with a pick and go move she crashed over the try line which Izzie once again successfully converted. Not content with just one, four minutes later Alice found herself heading for the line again after a great assist by Amee after a ball steal by Anne. The conversion is good and we’re at 38-12.

Izzie wanted to get her second chalked off so took it down field and scored just 3 minutes later but couldn’t convert this time.

The ref had his second incident of the day as he fell over Amee as she was laid on the floor, and Beverley scored and converted from out wide. We don’t think the two incidents were linked.

Getting the ball out to the wing in the dying minutes of the game, Ossett capitalised on Liv’s fast feet and she got over for her fourth. The conversion was missed but it didn’t matter.

Full time 48-19 to Ossett
