Town had sustained the pressure for long enough and went on an offensive of their own, Sam Akeroyd’s rasping drive stinging the palms of Gibson.
Just before the interval, the hosts broke the deadlock through right-back Lucas. His long throw-in caused havoc before he raced into the action himself and unleashed a powerful effort from close range to open Town’s account, his first goal for the club.
Akeroyd was booked in additional time at the end of the half for a strong challenge but the Reds went in 1-0 up at half-time.
