Newby replicates Berry

A warm day down at Tiger Park saw Leeds Akies come to play, with the Akies being favourites for the title was always going to be a tough battle and what a game it was. Leeds come with what seemed like the cast of 300 from 1 to 17 and from the off threw themselves around.

Tigers knew they had to start off quick if they was to compete against the side from North Leeds. On 4 minutes exactly same as last week Adam Newby was fed a ball from Craig Colbeck who had just resigned from Cutsyke this week and thrown straight in, Newby still had work to do and pushed of 3 defenders to score. Dave Berry missed his first attempt 4-0.

A few more attempts down the left with Callum Machin being unable to take a pass to give on, but was making up for everything with his go forward, Matthew West playing his 2nd game at prop was hitting hard in defence and attack. Hagger who was playing again shipped it right and the try was on but a wrong option by debutant Josh Ellis to step into the full back, but the signs was there.

But then on 16 minutes Leeds took a hold of the game and the prop crashed over for a converted try 4-6, 2 mins later the big 12 broke through to score another converted try 4-12 wasn't looking good. There was a respite for 6 minutes till Leeds scored again this time the 7 jinked through to score and convert his own try 4-18.

36 mins the 12 crashed over again from 5 yards this time the kick was missed 4-22 not looking good, because Tigers couldn't keep the ball. Then a rare penalty for the Tigers they started to roll up field another penalty and they was in the Akies 20m, on the 5th and last Colbeck who was growing into the game put in a cross field kick which fell perfectly into the arms of waiting Jordan Williams who scored for his second in 2 games.

Straight away from the off Tigers got the ball and put pressure on Leeds and on 44 mins Newby got a ball from Colbeck and crashed over Berry's kick hit the cross bar from the touch line 12-22, However the second half the tide didn't stop with on 47 minutes gone a crash over from the prop again for a converted try 12-28, but then the comeback started!!!

Tigers started to get good go forward led around the ruck by Josh Machin, with Callum Machin, Matthew West and Josh Ellis making good yards backed up by Arron and Jordan Williams down the right flank. on 54 minutes after a kick down field the winger knocked on and from resulting scrum Newby and Hagger both went close but then James Winstanley crashed over from 3 yards and Hagger slotted over 18-28.

65 minutes saw the try of the game, Tigers made yards and ball went to Arron Williams who made a break to half way line ball went threw 3 pairs of hands to J. Machin, to J. Ellis to G. Westbury who fed Adam Newby who rounded the winger and the full back to score in the corner Hagger's kick just missed but 22-28 and 15 minutes to go game was on a knife edge.

All the pressure was on the Akies and the Tigers was camped in their half and on 74 minutes Newby once again crashed over this time Berry slotted from touchline 28-28. The drama wasn't to end there, Berry made a break down the right on the 2nd tackle and the ball was worked to the posts and Berry popped up with 20 yard drop goal with 90 secs left.

Still time left for Leeds to have one last throw, from the kick off Leeds went short but knocked on from the scrum, there was a mix up and the ball was kicked out play by J. Machin on the full. Then from the Leeds scrum they knocked on which Anthony Slater picked up the ball he thought the referee said held but wasn't and was given a free kick for voluntary tackle which meant Leeds couldn't kick for goal. So last throw of the dice and Leeds went wide fortunately the ball ended up in the props hands who was gang tackled by 5 Tigers desperate to stop them scoring. With that the game was won.

F/T Tigers 29 Akies 28

Coach Hagger "I am absolutely over the moon with all my players today, we have once again laid a marker for the rest of the league to take notice 2 wins against 2 quality teams, now onto Farnley next week"
