David was born in 1933, the son of the great Frank Malir and his wife Grace. Frank had been a centre for Otley in the thirties, and distinguished himself both for Yorkshire and England. His mother Grace was an enthusiastic member as well, working in the tea room with Mrs Dandy. David had little option but to become diehard as well.
He played for some twenty years, captaining the side at one point. He would take the players on runs down to Pool and back before training, his dedication and enthusiasm brought about some excellent seasons and successful cup runs. He liked to tell the story of playing in a cup final at Bradford losing 6-3, scoring a try in the final minutes only to have it disallowed by the referee who was from Ilkley.
David tried many rugby positions before he found his home in the front row, where he was as respected there as any in the county. He was supported by his brother Ian who played at centre.
In his early days David started work with Jack Dandy in the wholesale potato business in Horsforth and then on his own account. David was also an active member of Otley Golf Club, and loved golf nearly just as much as he loved rugby!
Sadly, he had confined to a wheelchair towards the end of his life, which must have been very hard for such an active man. But he endured it great fortitude, resignation and courage.
He lived near Otley Golf Club and, despite being in a wheelchair, he was able to get himself down to the home games – irrespective of the weather.
We have to be thankful to people like David who give a life time of service to the Club.
