It is with great sadness Otley RUFC reports the death of an Otley stalwart

Peter died on 18 November 2020, aged 84 years.

He was born in Goole in the West Riding of Yorkshire. He attended Goole Grammar School when he played cricket for the 1st XI, where he was also a keen table tennis player.

After school he worked for the Inland Revenue in Goole until he was called up for National Service in 1954. He spent his two years in the RAF, mainly in Germany where he represented the Service at basketball. On demob he returned to the Revenue in Mansfield, and later in London.

Whilst in London he met Pat, appropriately in a pub! They were married in Boxgrove in Sussex in 1966. Peter played cricket for Wembley Taxes (subsequently the Taverners) whilst Pat was persuaded (or press-ganged) into scoring.

Another move took them to East Leake in Nottinghamshire where in 1971 their only child Sarah was born. Sadly, she died 8 months later.

Peter continued his cricket playing in East Leake but in addition was one of those responsible for setting up East Leake RUFC where he acted as secretary. Another promotion within the Revenue took him into Red Rose country where he took charge of the Nelson office. It was not long before he came back home, moving to Leeds and to live in Pool.

He played cricket in Pool, but more importantly joined his brother Keith as a member of Otley RUFC. In 1993 he joined the Committee and took over from Keith the responsibility for editing the programme. This was a task he continued until his death – his programmes were rightly praised by both home and visiting fans.

He was named as Club Man of the Year, and was extremely proud to be elected Club President in 2010, a position he held for 2 years.

In his lifetime Peter was present at many major sporting events rugby cricket football etc. Probably his visits with Pat to watch the British Lions in New Zealand, Australia and South Africa were their highlights.

A life well lived.

Our thoughts go out to Pat and Keith, to Peter’s nieces and nephews Claire, Kate and Nick (who played for Otley), and also to the rest of Peter’s family and friends.

Appreciation by Keith Thompson
