U13 edge 4G thriller

Otley U13 travelled up to Horsforth on a glorious morning, expecting a very tough morning against an excellent Yarnbury side. With the game taking stage front and center on the magnificent 4G pitch, a treat was in store for both sets of supporters.

Otley started superb, camped in and around the Yarnbury 22 but fell behind to a breakaway try from the hosts speedy winger who went 70m to touch down. This didn't rattle the Zebras, excellent drives forward form Brett Robinson, George Gillson and Dylan Duckmanton got the team back into Yarnbury territory. Charlie Medley, playing Fly Half, spotted space and the ball went down the line via Joe Rock and Alfie Aqsuith to Duckmanton who surged away to level the scores. Louis Broughton made a welcome return to the side and made great ground down the left. Quick ruck speed from Zak Smith and George Nancolas allowed Sam Davy to fire right, ending up with Harry Cropp dotting down with 3 defenders on top of him to see Otley into a halftime lead.

Half time changes brought Toby Foster on, and he made an immediate impact cutting through the defensive line and feeding Cropp who was held up over the line. The game was being played at a furious pace, and the home team gave everything to the cause. Cropp was held up for the 2nd time as Otley kept the pressure on, before the Zebras scored a wonderful team try to lead 15-5. Nancolas made the initial break, with supporting roles from Alex Mort, Medley, Isaac Rhodes and Will Reavey. The ball was quickly recycled from right to left through the backs of Davy, Foster, Medley and Toby Shippey before Rhys Stokey drew the last man to send Bobby Crabtree over in the corner. A truly excellent try.

Back came the hosts and they found a defensive miss match on the right which their big outside center expolited to score an equally good try to get right back into the game entering the final quarter. Injuries to Rock, Broughton and Stokey meant a shuffle of the deck. Crabtree was having a worldie at fullback, punching well above his weight tackling and saved Otley on at least 2 occasions as Yarnbury pressed forwards to level the game up. AJ Toyne stepped up also to repel any dangerous runners and as the game entered the final minute, Otley pressed into the home sides red zone. Davy fed Robinson who powered over from 15m, scattering Yarnbury defenders in his wake to settle an absolutely absorbing game between 2 very good u13 sides.

Handshakes all round as the lads made their way inside for sausage and chips. Full credit to both teams for an excellent morning, and full thanks to Yarnbury for the hospitality.
