The Raiders opened the 2017 season with a heavy defeat against a very strong Siddal side, falling to a 0 - 56 defeat.
Whilst the scoreline and result was disappointing there were lots of positives for the Raiders to take from the defeat against a side who have only lost once in the league in the last 4 seasons.
After a promising opening from the home team with strong running from Ben Beaumont and Kian Dickinson, the Raiders turned over possession within their own 20 meter zone and Siddal didn't need a second invite to put points on the board. Siddal's passing at the line and quick play of the ball saw them race over for another two scores before some strong defence from Kane Neal, Bailey Inhester and Cameron O'Connor saw the Raiders matching their opponents for a 10 - 15 minute spell, before some good offloading broke down the defence once again.
The home side finished the first half on a strong note with a well weighted Ewan Taylor kick just running dead in goal with Jake Woods within inches of grounding the ball to get some much needed points on the board for the Raiders.
The second half carried on with much of the same from Siddal seeing good control of the ruck, line speed in defence and strong line running to break down the home side. That said the Raiders kept battling with the welcome introduction of Jarred Winfeld following a long injury lay off, who impressed at times with the ball in hand. In the end despite a valliant effort and good attitude from the Raiders, Siddal took away the points and a place in the next round with a 56 - 0 win.
Man of the Match for the Raiders went to Kian Dickinson who was a constant thorn in the Siddal side with his aggressive and direct running.
Pre Season training continue's tomorrow evening at Outwood Grange and with the team coming through unscathed, only having the suspended Ben Wilson absent, they look in good shape to attack the season - hopefully with a warm up game before the business starts!
Thanks to all who braved the cold to attend today's game!
