Clwb Rygbi Bro Gwernant 11 - 48 Clwb Rygbi Rhuthun 2nds - Saturday April 2nd

Bro Gwernant welcomed Ruthin 2nds to Tower Fields over the weekend to take on the higher league opposition in the Quarter Finalsof the North Wales Shield competition over the weekend.

Both teams wanted to start on the front foot and the first 10minutes was an arm wrestle with both tackling hard, Ruthin made the first break through with a converted try with some good inter play between the backs. Bro started to get hold of the ball and Ruthin conceded 2 quick penalties with Wynn Jones slotting then both over from the middle of the posts. Bro then conceded a penalty themselves which the away team converted to leave the scores at 6 – 10 after 30minutes. Ruthin started to get a foothold of the game and scored a couple more tries before half time, one a charge down from a clearance kick which was a blow to the team just before the interval.

Bro made changes at half time to freshen things up, but with the Ruthin Lineout working so efficiently, Bro was starved of procession and Ruthin increased their lead in the latter stages of the match to put the match well out of sight.

Scott Leckie scored a consolation try for Bro towards the end of the game out wide in the corner with some quick feet to beat the on-rushing defence.

Huw Evans , Team Manager – “ We cant fault the effort of the players, we knew it was going to be a tough game , and it proved just that. Ruthin shut the door on a lot of our attack play and we found it hard to break them down. We haven’t much time to lick our wounds as we travel to Bala RFC on Wednesday evening (6th) and we are away again at the weekend to Porthmadog RFC. Its great to see we have plenty of competition in the squad and will be looking to finish the season on a high.

We would like to wish Ruthin all the best in the Semi Final of the Shield ”
