After the heroics of last week, Rattigan was mysteriously unavailable for selection with speculation rife of a dressing room rift. Rumours suggest that a spoof Twitter account (@RatGenius) had been set up by someone within the team though this now appears to have been removed.
This left the vacant opening birth to Chris Day sporting a moustache that would make the Village People proud and which many of his colleagues suggested really suited him. It seems likely that he may well keep it beyond November.
However, in his first knock of the indoor season, Day went early as Nondies batted first leaving Zia to marshall the batting. He responded with a quality 27 not out, finishing his innings with a massive 30 yard six before enforced retirement.
Zia's quick fire start was then slowed down by some effective Rowant bowling and Kamran's unique batting style which restricted Nondies to a total of 82 from their 10 overs. Many fans are questioning the effectiveness of Kamran's favourite forward defensive shot within in a 10 over per side game.
Joe Butler hit and impressive 22 with Kamran ending up on 15 not out (off approx 40 balls - that's what it felt like watching). But the final total of 82 was always going to be tough to defend and did not look like enough.
Before the match, Nondies management declared that the bowling strategy would be to restrict the extras (after last weeks total of 46). Unfortunately this didn't appear to work as Zia struggled to land the ball on the strip giving away a number of wides (which count as 3 in indoor cricket). However, Toukeer Ahmed did bowl a consistent spell to slow down the galloping Rowant run rate and Kamran Ahmed bowled his usual spell of slow swing 'with attitude'. In a generally friendly atmosphere Kamran still managed to find enough venom to give a Rowant batsman the big send off for one of his 3 wickets even though the mode of dismissal was 'hit ceiling' which many may find slightly embarrassing. The rule books are to be checked as to whether these 'dismissals' count in the end of season averages.
Nontheless, Nondies were up agaisnt it as Rowant needed only 12 off the last 2 overs which they were making look easy when the final bastman inexplicably lofted a Kamran 'pie' straight to mid off. Zia managed to cling on desperately as the Nondies boys celebrated another famous win.
This latest victory will send shock waves througout the competition as Nondies soar up to 3rd in the table.
Even with Rattigan, Shabhaz and Adamson available again for selection next week, it is hard to imagine that this winning team will be changed. Though Zia may need to spend some time with the bowling coach to help get his radar back on track.
The next match is on Tuesday 13th November at Peers School Academy vs. Tiddington. All fans welcome.
