Somerset Vikings 24 Oxford Cavaliers 42

Oxford Cavaliers put in a dogged performance full of graft to almost wrap up 1st position in the league after being the only side this year to beat Somerset away from home, in what was excruciating playing conditions on the hottest day of the year so far.

The match was played in 4 quarters and the first quarter was won 18-0 to the cavaliers in what was a solid structured 20 minutes, Fotu Topou was the first scorer after 5 minutes play, with the ball coming out on the forth and Topou barging his way over, in a game where he put in some thumping hits on his ex team mates. The second try came after regular repeat sets from the cavs, putting somerset through their paces, scrum half Stewart Hannah beating a defender and hitting the gap to score and after the conversion make it 12-0. Somerset were struggling due to the heat and the Oxford sides pace and just before the 20 was up, captain Wes Newton skipped round the markers at the ruck to go in under the posts untouched.

After a quick drinks break it was almost like a different side played the next quarter, after a few handing errors and penalties gave the vikings prized possession on such a hot day, the cavaliers struggled to regain themselves after defending for long periods. Some good defence was made, with mention to team man of the match John Conway returning to the game after a 3 year absence. Somerset managed to score 3 converted tries to make it 18 all, and even though the sides were even, for the players it felt as though they were no longer in the game, as being out of possession was so much more hard work than being in it.

The cavaliers had a re group at half time with experienced players Newton, Hannah, Kimber and half back Adam White all having a say on what needs to happen. From here on the cavaliers were so impressive in the final quarters in the way they controlled the game and put the vikings to the sword, specially after travelling such a long way with a squad of only 15 against a rotated vikings squad of 20. They would win the final two quarters 4 tries to just the one from somerset, Newton was the first to add to the tally, again picking the ball from the base of the ruck and weaving through the defence to score, Adam white scoring 2 tries both from the second receiver position and stepping round the upcoming opposition. Fotu Topou made it a brace just to rub salt into the wounds, running a good 30 metres and going straight through the winger and centre, and then the fullback, Adam White finishing off his kicking duties with an impressive 7 from 7.

Team chairman Stuart James who travelled down to watch his side said of the performance "I cannot tell you how proud i am to have seen such a display of true grit and determination, from a squad of 15 lads who would not and did not give up in extremely hot conditions against a strong Somerset team, well done to every player"
