Eagles collapse

A shocking performance today against a team we beat 2-1 in a friendly in May. They were in the C Division last year but only picked up one point in the whole season. So we should have done much better today but we completely lost our shape, energy and discipline. We were missing two defenders and that is our weakness so it was not going to be easy today but many of the boys are just not listening and think they know best.

We were supposed to play a 4-5-1 formation in the first half but for most of the half I counted three boys hanging on the opposition defensive line so we were effectively playing 4-3-3 which meant we were short in the middle, which meant our defenders pushed up and we were caught at the back time and time again.

The opening exchanges weren't too bad and despite losing an early goal Joseph levelled with a nice shot from he edge of the area and I thought we were back in it. With both our left backs missing that was an area of weakness and they exploited that a couple of times in the first half. Going in a 4-1 down gave us a mountain to climb and we moved to 3 at the back to try and push for goals but we left the centre too exposed and fell to an avalanche of attacks conceding 4 goals in the last 5 minutes.

There were some positives with Charlie P and Max C playing some nice passing triangles to start attacks down the right in the 2nd half. Jospeh, Jack and Joe were starting to link up well in the middle and Joe showed good skill and composure to play around the box, waiting for his chance to beat the keeper for our 2nd goal.

Our main problems were our inability, or unwillingness, to pass and move for each other. The forward line were too static and not dropping deep for the ball, our defence were not keeping shape and generally we were losing possession by wayward passing or taking too long on the ball.

Plenty to work on in training but we have been covering these items time and again but on match day the boys tend to forget, panic or ignore the advice. I think we have too many who are not playing as a team and won't work for each other. Until we change this results like this will continue.

MOTM today was Max Caswell for some good work down the right in the 2nd half.
